Fall TV 2010: The Initial Picks

I know I’m a bit late for the beginning of the Fall TV Season, being that Ellen already started with new episodes, but most of the primetime line-ups have yet to arrive. Below are my initial picks. I’m going to give a few shows a three-episode trial before I cut some, so this isn’t the final list. I’m an average DVR owner with the capability for recording two shows at a time, so there were some tough choices to make. It’s like picking a favorite Hershey Miniature. Sure, there are some obvious choices, but I’m gonna eat the whole bag anyways. I watch a LOT of TV. It helps me work. Don’t judge.

MONDAYS

8:00

- How I Met Your Mother (CBS) – One of the only CBS sitcoms I enjoy. CBS is the network that tried to pass Golden Palace as the second coming of the Golden Girls.
- Chuck (NBC) – A show about a geek that works at a faux Best Buy and also spies with the guy from Firefly? Duh (#1)

9:00

- The Event (NBC) – Sure, it looks like the next FlashForward, but I’m a sucker for a high-premise hour-long. It better impress early.
- Lone Star (Fox) – Another new show about a con-man in Texas. I guess it’s all of the Knot’s Landing, Falcon’s Crest and Dallas that my mom watched that conditioned me to take notice.

10:00

- Castle (ABC) – I came into this late, but it’s nice background fluff. That Nathan Fillion is very charismatic.
- Hawaii Five-0 (CBS) – With one of the most snoggable new casts on television, I’ll be tuning in mostly for that. Heck, it even has that hot chick from Battlestar Galactica.

Addendum

- House (Fox) – I dropped it a season or two ago because of high competition, but I’ll catch up on syndication someday.
- Weeds (Showtime) – We watch this in batches OnDemand.

TUESDAYS

8:00

- No Ordinary Family (NBC) – A live-action Incredibles. Sure. Why not.
- Glee (Fox) – I’m gay. Duh (#2)

9:00

- Raising Hope & Running Wilde (Fox) – I’m still looking for a Malcolm in the Middle heir. The Middle on ABC is not it.
- Life Unexpected (The CW) – Speaking of heirs, this is surprise from last season. This show harkens back to the old WB shows that had heart and wit (not like most of the other teen crap on this network).

10:00

- The Good Wife (CBS) – Everybody roots for Nurse Hathaway.
- Parenthood (NBC) – Tuesday night is full of surprises from last season. A great family ensemble (if you can ignore that two actors playing siblings are hooking up in real life).

WEDNESDAYS

8:00

- Survivor: Nicaragua (CBS) – Yep. Still addicted.
- Undercovers (NBC) – JJ Abrams has had the golden touch for the last several years for me. I just hope this isn’t Alias Lite.

9:00

- Modern Family & Cougar Town (ABC) – My two favorite new comedies from last year.
- Law & Order: SVU – More great background television.
10:00
- Top Chef: Just Desserts (Bravo) – I loves me some Top Chef, no matter what form it takes (although that frozen-faced Asian host on Top Chef: Masters gets on my nerves).

THURSDAYS

8:00

- Community & 30 Rock (NBC) – The beginning of NBC’s solid Thursday night comedy line-up.
- Bones (Fox) vs The Vampire Diaries (The CW) – This is an iffy one. It was previously taken up by Survivor, so I may be more faithful to Bones (rather than catching it whenevs) or give that dredge on the CW a try (since I have enjoyed the music on the few episodes I saw at the Brewsters).

9:00

- The Office & Outsourced (NBC) – This is Michael Scott’s last year. I say the show should go out with him.
- Fringe (Fox) – More enjoyable than the X-Files.

10:00

- Private Practice (ABC) – I gave up on Grey’s years ago, but I still need my fill of bad hospital drama.
- The Mentalist (CBS) – Starring one of the most handsome men on television, I actually enjoy this procedural. At least I didn’t get sucked into the CSI franchise.

FRIDAYS

8:00

- Human Target (Fox) – Based on a comic book. (Duh #3)
- Smallville (The CW) – See above.

SATURDAYS

Addendum

- HGTV and various cable marathons – It’s the perfect background television while doing household things or nap lounging.
- Life – Not the nature documentary series, the actual practice of it. Hopefully I’ll be out doing something.

SUNDAYS

8:00

- The Amazing Race (CBS) – My favorite reality competition series. It always makes me want to travel out of the country.
- The Simpsons & The Cleveland Show (Fox) – The beginning of a solid night of animated comedy.

9:00

- Family Guy & American Dad (Fox) – And the end of said night of animated comedy.

10:00

- Brothers & Sisters (ABC) – Sally Field does know her way around a family dramedy.
- The Walking Dead (AMC) – This is my MOST anticipated series of the year, if not the past five years (since Lost). It’s based on my favorite graphic novel series (yes, comics). It’s run by the director of Shawshank Redemption. And it’s about zombies. GEEKGASM!

Addendum

- Dexter (Showtime) – I’m finally gonna restart this show from Season One… in between my West Wing marathons.

Thank Jeebus for DVRs.
